Winter is a breathtaking time of the year, especially in the regions that are slammed with a show. Children adore winter in particular, as it provides a lot of opportunities for entertainments. Winter brings a lot of grace and space for photographers' creation. But from the other hand, frosty weather entails many difficulties that every newbie photographer can face. In this article, I'll give you a few tips on winter photography and explain how to get great winter pictures.

1. Pay attention to batteries

If you are going to photograph in winter, the first thing you should remember about is batteries. Frost can draw energy out of your camera's battery in a matter of seconds. That's why it's important to have fully charged batteries. And it's even better to have several spare ones that you should keep in warm place, in the inner pocket of your coat for example.

Moreover, if you make some pauses after every shot, it makes sense to remove the battery from the camera and put it in some warm place, and put it back only before the shooting.

2. Be attentive while changing optics

It's preferable to shoot with one lens, previously installed at home. If during the winter photo session you need to change the lens, be attentive, especially when it snows outside.  Avoid situations, when moisture can get inside the camera. It may be fatal for your gear.

When the weather conditions were particularly dreadful take a big plastic bag with you while changing lenses you will be able to place a camera inside the bag to protect in from snow. Moreover – watch the wind, it can get show and moisture inside the camera.

3. Beware of condensation

Condensation is one of the most insidious winter enemies of every photographer. Be careful, when you bring the camera from frost into a warm room or a car. Usually, in a warm place, the humidity of the air is rather high. If you quickly take a cold camera out from the bag, the condensation cycle will begin. That may lead to damages, especially if you decide to turn it on. To avoid this, you can use one trick, before taking a camera into a warm room, place it into a plastic bag and close tightly to limit the contact of warm, humid air with the body of the camera and the lens. Once the camera warms up, open the bag and take it out.

When the frost is severe, it's difficult for a camera to work, you may experience problems with display, the lubricant inside the camera becomes thicker. To avoid the frost impact on the camera, hide it in your bag from time to time. At the same time, it's critical to avoid huge temperature leaps, as it again may cause condensation.

4. Protect the lens

Don't forget to put a lens cover, use a lens hood or other methods to protect the lens from snow or rain. Moreover, always take with you a good kit for lens cleaning. Usually, you don’t know when you need to clean your lens from drops of water or condensation.

5. Buy good gloves

Protect your hands while taking photos on cold winter days. First of all, it will be a significant failure if you let your expensive camera out of your numb fingers. Secondly, don't forget about comfort. Thick knitted mittens will probably protect your hands from frost, but the work with the camera will turn into a hell. So buy gloves in which you will be able to move your fingers. Perhaps these will be thin but warm gloves made from up to date materials.

6. Pay attention to memory cards

If an extended photo session is coming soon, during which you will require several memory cards, buy a small box or a case for them.

Also, don't change cards with frozen hands. The sensitivity of your fingers reduces significantly, and a small card can easily slip out of your hands and get into snow or water. And all the materials of your photo session will be in danger.

7.  Add colour

Winter is the most monotonous term of the year. Even green conifer trees are hidden under the snow; that's why sometimes you can get almost black and white photo. From the one hand it can help you to get minimalist pictures and from the other, your photos can look really dull and sad. The absence of any bright colors in winter makes any color, apart from white and green, the central element of the picture, and you can use it to your advantage. Wait for pink colors after the sunset and take a photo of a model against the light source. Don't forget about bright accessories and clothes. Even in the gloomiest day, you can place a bright element in your shot, thus reviving your photo.
