Great Tips to Improve Your Street Photography

Most everyone has done some street photography at some point. It's not just fun; it's also a great way to challenge your skills as a photographer. Does it sound like an easy genre - point and shoot, right?

Well, it's not always so easy. It can take years of practice to hone your street skills. Here are three tips to consider if you're looking to improve your street pictures.

1. Perspective and composition matter.

Don't just shoot straight on at eye level. Consider varying angles from which to shoot your subject - whether it's from above or from ground level shooting up.

Sometimes it's the most unexpected angle which proves to be the best. For example, if you're photography sports and you go to shoot the team huddle. Imagine taking the shot from overhead for an unexpected glimpse straight into the huddle. It gives the viewer a very different perspective.

2. Action shots can frame a shot rather than be the subject.

Why not shoot straight through the action to capture what's behind it? The action might set the stage for the composition while the background is the true subject.

This can sometimes be the case with sports photography, but it's certainly true of street photography where sometimes you want to capture what's on the other side of the motion. (An example would be shooting across a busy street to a something/subject on the other side.) You'll probably need to shoot and focus on manual.

3. Leverage the light - natural or artificial.

Depending on where and what you're shooting (and when), leverage light as much as possible. It can enhance a shot or make it part of your composition. If you're shooting black and white, lighting can be even more critical. Don't forget to consider shadows in your photo's composition as well.

In certain cases, you might find that the shadows are the subject. The more skilled you become as a street photographer, the easier and more natural it will be to work with light and use it to your advantage.
